Sustainability at Whitewater Group
Solutions engineered to save water
How we’re Making Change
As a company full of water experts, we’ve got the power and the responsibility to be a sustainability leader. Here’s what we’re doing to get there:
Whitewater Group has joined the Techies Go Green business community to learn from other companies that are also on the journey to net zero emissions.
Environmental compliance is a priority for any good business. We adhere to the ISO 140001 Environmental Management Systems standard to ensure we meet all regularity requirements.
In 2024 we installed our first EV charging station at our Bray headquarters to help our team make the change to lower carbon transport.
In 2024 we installed the first phase of our solar power roll out at Whitewater House in Bray. Generating low carbon electricity on site helps reduce our Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
How our designs save water around the Europe
Take a watershed perspective
It’s only possible to choose the right solutions for a water treatment system when you understand how water is sourced and used in the broader region. We start by looking at other water users and looking for opportunities to integrate. Early engagement is essential for this.
Choose the most sustainable source
We use a clear hierarchy when choosing water sources for projects. Rainwater, surface water, and local industrial waste streams can provide sustainable sources. Using potable water for industrial purposes is an inefficient use of a precious resource and should be avoided if possible.
Design for low water loss and low chemical input water treatment
We prioritise equipment selection that inherently reduces water loss, and whenever possible use green oxidants like H2O2 if chemical treatment is required.
Design for Circularity
Designing for reuse of waste streams from the outset opens opportunities like blowdown recovery, irrigation and mineral recovery.
Use Nature Based Solutions
Nature based solutions, like constructed wetlands to treat wastewater, offer benefits at both ends of the treatment stream. They are low capital and operational cost and bring a suite of other benefits like microclimate control and clean air.
Monitor performance
You can’t improve what you can’t measure. We monitor data from flow meters and sensors installed in our water treatment plants to help optimize performance and proactively identify potential issues.
Support regenerative projects
We know that it’s not enough to focus on just what happens within our projects. To go further, we’re working to support watershed regeneration projects in the regions we operate in.
Whitewater Group projects in action
We’ve helped clients treat alternative water sources, waste streams, and reduce potable water demand.
100%
Water demand at a data centre in Sweden met by treated snowmelt and rainfall.
600m3 per day
Industrial wastewater reused at a facility in the west of Ireland.
50%
Reduced demand for potable water at a data centre in Dublin through design improvements.
